Tea with the Deacon Nov 8, 15, 22
Our season after Pentecost is ebbing into Advent. Therefore, we will spend a little more time with Matthew in November.
The Gospel readings during Advent leave Matthew behind and spend time with Mark, Luke and John. Therefore, we will shift gears during Advent and discover what other Gospel writings have to say about Jesus’ ministry.
I want to mention that I will be booked solid with church events and a pre-council meeting for our Convocation this coming Sunday. Therefore, I will not host a Tea with the Deacon on Sunday, November 1 (All Saints Day.) However, we will start back with our Tea on Sunday November 8, and continue through Sunday, November 22 (Christ the King Sunday) at 1 pm. I will not host a Tea on Sunday, November 29 to honor our time that weekend for the Thanksgiving holidays.
Now that we have the schedule laid out, I will share a little about the art in this article, Christ Triumphant over Sin and Death, by Peter Paul Rubens.
Rubens was a Flemish Baroque artist whose artistic style promoted the Counter-Reformation of the day. This painting is a good example, depicting Christianity in a more victorious genre. His allegorical view of Christ the King represents classic masculine tropes of athleticism, valor in war, and civil authority. Christ sits prominently center of the frame with a globe under one hand and his mighty sword in the other, all the while holding sin and death (skull and snake) under foot.
Here again, I am reminded of the various languages of the arts in how one’s faith can be represented. This view of Christ the King is a little different from the picture painted in Matthew’s Gospel for Christ the King Sunday.
Join us for Tea this month as we share our stories in how we imagine Christ as King. You can find the Zoom invitation link listed below.
