Tea with Deacon Arthur Feb 7 & 14

Our season after the Epiphany flows into a few Sundays in February before we venture into the Lenten Season.  Remember, Ash Wednesday is February 17.  That said, we would continue our conversation with Mark for our Tea with the Deacon on Sunday February 7 at 2 p.m. and Sunday February 14 at 1 p.m.  You can find the Zoom invitations listed below. 

We will take a little break from our tea and theology during Lent.  St. Christopher’s will host a Lenten Book Study with Zoom gatherings on Wednesday evenings, sharing stories found in our Presiding Bishop’s (Bishop Michael Curry) book Love is the Way.  I would like to honor space and time toward that endeavor.   

Now, about the artwork above.  As some may know, Tiziano Vecelli “Titian” is one of my favorite artists of religious subjects from the Italian Renaissance.  While I love his painting of the Transfiguration, I am still not sure how to digest it.  Titian portrays this mountain top moment with intense activity. 

As a matter of reference, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke have a little variation on the same moment from Mark.  In Matthew, Jesus touches the disciples in their fear.  Luke shares that the disciples were terrified after they entered the cloud along with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah.  However, Mark does not mention an overwhelming state of fear, although, Peter was a little speechless.  That leads me to believe that this mountain top experience may have been a little more pastoral with a shimmering glow all around, rather than a high-energy flash of light striking fear into the unsuspecting disciples.
