A Time of Listening and Expectation

AdventWeek1.JPG

Dear All,

Advent is almost upon us and we begin to live into a time of listening and expectation.

It is hard to listen quietly, reflectively, when our culture is so eager to turn up the volume and bombard us with demands to buy, buy, buy. It is too easy to race ahead to the birth of the baby Jesus and miss the voice of John the Baptist telling us to repent and make straight the way of the Lord. As we watch the news on television it can be difficult to believe in Isaiah’s vision of the Peaceable Kingdom. And yet this is our calling as Christians.

I invite you to join with us at St. Christopher’s as we journey through Advent. Come listen to the words of the readings. Participate in the liturgy. Be a part of the great tradition of the Church as she moves us through this season of Advent.

I commend to you for your devotional reading the “Forward Day by Day” booklets available in the narthex and in the parlor. Also, this is a good time to pray one or more of the daily offices as found in the prayer book. If you don’t have a Book of Common Prayer at home, there are still some available for you to take home with you.

And of course it wouldn’t be Advent without an Advent wreath. After service this Sunday we will make some simple Advent wreaths for those who don’t already have one. Come join us, have some coffee, and learn about the traditions behind the Advent wreath.

Blessings,
Lorna+
